Celebrities and many others #fibromyalgia have been in the news a few times this year which all sufferers have to agree has actually helped to raise awareness of this condition. But why should we need celebrities to raise awareness? Well, Lady Gaga, Morgan Freeman, Sinead O'Connor, Kyle Richards, Rosie Hamlin, Janeane Garofalo, Michael James Hastings, Jo Guest, A.J. Langer and Mary McDonough have all spoken out about the disorder but surely there must be a lot more celebrities in all walks of life that have this condition. Fibromyalgia Aware say that the disorder affects an estimated 10 million people in the U.S. and an estimated 3-6% of the world population. While it is most prevalent in women —75-90 percent of the people who have FM are women —it also occurs in men and children of all ethnic groups. I decided to ask Google about who had #fibromyalgia starting with writers and authors of this condition and up came an article from the University of Dundee about a new comic they had put together that tells the story of #fibromyalgia. It said that a series of comics designed to inform the public about common but poorly understood conditions launches with the first edition focusing on fibromyalgia. Writers, comic artists and health professionals from the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside will celebrate the publication of ‘Fibromyalgia and Us’

I tried to see if there are any politicians or sport professionals with this condition but none came up, and yet the figures about show that an estimated 3-6% of the world population have this disorder so why after all the work that has been done to raise awareness of it do some people still find it hard to say they suffer from it. If we could get more celebrities, professionals, politicians or sports professionals admitting they have it then this would without doubt help raise awareness to it. It's just a shame that Lady Gaga seems to be the most famous celebrity to admit she has it.
